NW IPM — consulting an information-rich web site

http://www.nwipm.info
Small fruit pest information & an industry resource
Over the dozen years since starting our ag consulting business, we have found many useful agriculture web sites that offer excellent information about pests in small fruits. However, none presented the information in what we thought was a really simple, easy to navigate method. Often the information could only be retrieved by going from one link to another, to another, to another, etc.

In early 2004, we decided to try our hand at designing a web site that would be an industry resource and offer basic IPM information in as straight-forward a fashion as possible. We wanted the site (http://www.nwipm.info) to find information fast. The site has a searchable database — you can choose the type of crop and whether to look at insects or diseases, or both, or use the alphabet option. That choice brings up a list with a picture and short description for all the insects and/or diseases you selected. If you want more information, you can click on the name and get a detail page with more pictures. There are popup windows for chemical control, biological controls, cultural controls -- or a single popup that lists all the information.

Pictures of berry pest insects and diseases
We also offer a easy way to search for pictures for a particular crop's insects and/or diseases. We have a number of pictures on the site, and are always taking new ones or seeking photos from the many people we know in the industry who are better at photography than we are.

Although the insect/disease search option is the biggest amount of information on the site, we also have a large list of resources which includes:
Alternative Crops | Berry Information Sites | Berry Researh | Comissions & Councils | Degree Day/Weather Sites | Extension | Growers | IPM Sites | Newsletters | On-line Pest Manuals | Pest Management Strategic Plans | Pesticide Label Sites | Processors/IndustryPropogators | State Departments of Agriculture | Weeds.

Constantly updated Industry calendar and a pesticide guide
We moved the industry calendar and Joe DeFrancisco's pesticide guide from our business site (this one) to nwipm.info because we think it is important to differentiate between information about our business and industry information.

The web site also houses the very popular WxCafe, created and updated at least once a week by Rufus La Lone. This shows up on the home page, where we also have the ability to post pictures of current interest and alerts or industry information that we feel is too important to wait until our weekly email Small Fruit Update is distributed.

And, finally, we bought the domain nwipm.com so anyone who wants to find the site and is used to the .com ending would be seamlessly passed through to the .info domain. If you have any questions about the site, let us know.
